Let's dive in! πŸ‘‡

How Creators Will Survive This Economic Downturn πŸ‘

What's happening? We don't want to scare you, but it's pretty clear we're in the midst of some sort of global economic downturn. As a creator, it's important to know what to do in times like these.

Lucky for us, Josh Harmon, a sound effects creator with over 4 million followers on YouTube and 2 million subscribers on YouTuber, shared what he is doing to prepare for a recession.

85% of Josh's income comes from brand partnerships and in tough economic times, unfortunately for creators, marketing and advertising budgets are first to go. This can lead to brand deals being called off and expected income to drop drastically.

So, here are Josh's 5 tips for surviving an economic downturn as a content creator:

  1. Diversify your income streams: It's important to build up a portfolio of income streams in case one dries up. For example, Josh is writing a book and working on original music that I can sell, and he's even considering going on tour.

  2. Communicate with your audience: Your audience is your biggest asset, so it's important to keep in regular touch with them to stay engaged and make it easier to secure bigger brand partnerships. Josh says that launching a newsletter is a great way to do this, and email is definitely not going away.

  3. Invest in your content: Even when money is tight, it's always worth investing in yourself as a creator. Josh bought some expensive lights early on that paid for themselves in just a few weeks by allowing him to make better-quality content that attracted a wider audience.

  4. Manage your finances: As a self-employed creator, it's crucial to get to grips with handling your own money. Setting aside some savings and planning ahead are important for long-term stability.

  5. Talk to other creators: When times are tough, it's never a good idea to go it alone. Having a network of creator friends is really important because you can be in the trenches together and share information and advice.

Upload Processing Time Transparency πŸ”

What's happening? Previously, when a video was uploaded on YouTube and the "processing" icon appeared, it was unclear how long it would take for the video to be ready for viewing in crisp 4K resolution. Good news - starting today, YouTube will let users know how much time is left for their videos to finish processing at different quality levels.
