A Beginners Guide To Growing An Audience 🙋‍♂️

A simple 4 step guide to growing an audience in 2022

Hey there. We have a fresh start to the week and today we're gonna avoid anything and everything that has to do with the Twitter drama. What we refuse to avoid is our 4 step guide to audience growth. Sorry, not sorry.

Let's dive in! 👇

A Beginners Guide To Growing An Audience 🙋‍♂️

So many creators expect to blow up after posting a couple videos on YouTube, Reels on Instagram, tweets on Twitter... the list goes on.

What normally happens? Nothing. That's why we put together a simple 4 step guide to audience growth.

Step 1: Just start.

Choose one platform to focus the majority of your time and effort on. Are you good on camera? Choose YouTube or TikTok. Are you a good writer? Choose Twitter and/or a blog. Are you a photographer? Instagram is your best bet.

Once you choose your primary platform, define your target audience. Make sure to be specific. If you're having a hard time choosing your target audience, start with yourself 5 years ago. Were you a student? Searching for a promotion in your job? Getting over a breakup? Having your first child? Take whatever situation you were in and create content helping other people who are currently in that situation.

Don't get hung up on choosing a niche. Choose 3 topics (a.k.a. content pillars) you are interested in, have experience with, or have unique knowledge of. Experiment with these topics and let your audience tell you what they want to see more of.

Niching down will be important, but just getting started is more crucial in this step. That is UNLESS you are an expert in any field. If that's you - double down on the knowledge and experiences you have that other people are seeking out from the jump.

Step 2: Grow from 0 to 1,000 followers

This is the hardest part and the place where so many creators give up. Why? Because it seems like no one cares about you or the content you're creating. And unfortunately, this is somewhat true... BUT not because you're not talented. It's because no one knows who you are yet.

As far as content goes at this point, quantity is more important than quality. The quality will improve as the quantity improves - so, just create and publish. And don't expect to blow up overnight. This rarely ever happens.

It might even be a good idea to pay little attention to the analytics. Instead, focus on the small improvements you are making in your scripts, edits, storytelling, thumbnails, and titles with every piece of content you put out. If you build a few subscribers/followers per video/post, you're gaining momentum.

To speed up the to process from 0 to 1,000 followers, you should:

  • Give people a reason to follow with your profile picture and bio

  • Engage with current followers

  • Seek out people you would like to follow you and engage with their content

  • DM potential followers to let them know who you are

  • Post content that encourages engagement

  • Present unique opinions on issues that your target audience cares about

  • Experiment, analyze, and ask for feedback

  • AND collaborate with other creators... 👇

Step 3: Collaborate with other creators on the platform

Don't go for the big dogs here. People with large audiences are busy, which means you will waste your time reaching out to them. Instead, go for creators you admire, truly want to connect with, and have a slightly larger audience than you do. Start with creators who have 10,000 - 100,000 subscribers and see if you get any interest. You'll need to reach out to a lot of creators to start until you have a larger audience, so get used to rejection.

Creators tend to feel as if they deserve to collaborate with the best of the best in their niche. But, don't think this way. If you collaborate with 5 creators that have 20,000 followers, you have potential to get your content in front of 100,000 new viewers. If 1% follow you, that's 1,000 new followers.

Step 4: Determine what's working, double down, and bring a bit more YOU

By now, you should have an idea of what type of content is producing the best results. If you're on YouTube, you should have posted 30 videos by now. If you're on TikTok, you should've reached 100 TikToks by now. Blogger? 30 blog posts. Photographer? 100 IG posts. You get it - you should have a large enough sample size to determine what's working. And once you do, double down on it.

Bring something new to your niche. In order to grow an audience in 2022, you need to be different than everyone else in your space while also providing value. Maybe you create personal finance content on YouTube, have a good sense of humor, and a film-making background. You can make high-quality, cinematic, humorous videos about the lessons you've learned throughout your personal finance journey.

The "you" in your content is what's going to be the differentiator. So, double down on the content topics that are performing best, but begin to incorporate your unique skills, experiences, and your personality.
