A Year Old Podcast With An Amateur Podcast Host Is Climbing The Charts πŸŽ™

The Story

Jemma Sbeg, an Australian psychology graduate, decided in 2021 that she wanted to create a podcast to apply the psychological concepts she had learned in school to the common issues faced by people in their 20s.

She didn't expect much because the top podcasts tend to stay at the top of the charts week after week. Unless you're a celebrity, Jemma thought that it was impossible to start a new, top podcast.

Well, SPOILER - Jemma's The Psychology of your 20's is currently a Top 10 podcast on Spotify... πŸ‘‡

Jemma started by recording in the back of her Subaru and the podcast seemed to gaining little traction, with 15,000 downloads in the first 10 months.

But something changed in April, when she released an episode on loneliness that took off! She still doesn’t know exactly why. Listeners started going through her backlog of episodes and the show has since amassed 1.4 million downloads. It's currently sitting above big name podcasts like Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain and Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy.

Key Takeaways

Don't give up when you don't see immediate results. After 10 months, Jemma had only 15,000 downloads. That's less than 1,500 per month. Most creators would give up, but Jemma didn't and now she's sitting at the top of the Spotify podcast charts.

You don't have to be a celebrity to have a top podcast. Spotify’s podcast charts appear to be heavily influenced by new listeners. This is beneficial for new podcasts. In Jemma's case, because one of her episodes exploded, she peaked at #4 on the Spotify charts, getting her more exposure to new listeners, allowing he to sit at the top of the charts for consecutive weeks, continuing to grow the podcast.
